No, I disagree. Transliteration, even good transliteration, is a crutch that will always hold you back. It's for people who just need to learn a few words, but don't intend to actually learn the language.

Learning the alphabet is just about the easiest thing you will ever do in learning Russian, so people need to get over their fear and just do it.
