    Learn cursive.

Why, i put this off for so long. and now i know i shouldn't have. i finally tought myself the russian alphabet in cursive today. and surprisingly enough, it took maybe an hour to get 80 percent of it down. the three advantages i saw first off were

    1. faster writing of course
    2. my handwriting looks much much much neater ! one of the reasons i put it off is because i have probly the worst handwriting in the world,so i figured no one could read it, probly not even me.
    3. the vocab!, when writing down new words, and memorizing new letters at the same time, i have no idea why but it just makes the words click. i learned i think 12, count them 12 new words today, just by writing them only 2 or 3 times. this is a huge step, that i do not regret taking, and i encourage any serouse learners of russian, to also try to throw away your robotic printing ways, and write like a normal person (russian) would.

I used a прописи and tracing paper to get the feel of how the letters flow. It was a lot faster and easier than copying by sight.

yes, only an hour. you find that most of the letters look somwaht the same, but it just flows off your hand more or less. i just copied down the printed alphabet, then i drew a line down right next to it, and put the cursive letters, so i wrote each one at least once. then i just started translating words, and went over them again to make sure i could read it it's really not that bad, just make sure when u are writing them down the first time u do a good job, but after that its ok to get a lil sloppy, ur just learning. i had to erase a few letters like 5 or 6 times before i got them how i wanted them to look.

Since you mentioned the hooks, a question that I haven't been able to find the answer for: it is easy to draw those hooks when the drawing of previous letter ends in the line. But what happens with letters such as b or o, in which the drawing ends above the baseline?

My main problem with handwriting is that I keep wanting to join the и on to the previous letter. It seems it is really important to lift up ones pen and start the и from the top.

I learned Russian cursive when I first learned the alphabet. It just looks so much cooler, and it is way easier too. I personally hate writing in print. It takes too long and it's sloppy (for me).

Heh. I'm not sure if I remember print correctly. They made us learn cursive, first thing. Before print, even. =P

    Interesting link

This is basically the main source I used when I learnt how to write in cursive Cyrillic, some time ago:

    http://www.lang.ourfamily.com/propisi/myhome.html

As strange as it may be, I got so used to writing in cursive since then that I can no longer write as fast or naturally in printed letters. :P

I always wrote in English in print, but when I started learning Russian, I started writing cursive a lot more. Faster, but not as clean looking. And, sometimes I get confused and when I want to write an english d I write a g instead because I write Russian cursive more than English.
    Yay! I broke 200 posts!

Hebrew indeed — I took it from a hymn we used to sing at church, but later I found out it was both a verse from Deuteronomy and (it seems) a popular Hebrew saying. In Russian, that verse would read as, 'Слушай, Израиль: Господь, Бог наш, Господь един есть.'

Sure they can be, but they are not connected in proper writing.
