Thread: Need help translating some phrases!

I have a few words/phrases which I'm struggling to translate, can anyone please help?

1. I know охлаждать mean to cool/chill, but what does it mean in the context мысль охлаждает?
2. кухонная мудрость (context: ушибленный кухонной мудростью человек)
3. I've come across this combination a few times which I can't figure out: 'твои отношения с твоей этой самой, это что?' and 'Слова же о моей этой самой означают женщину...'
4. вопрос с подкладкой
5. как в очко, перебор
6. учитывая лексическую атмосферу, в которой мы живем с детства (literally, given the lexical atmosphere... but is there a less literal meaning to this?)
7. в призрачные для нас тридцатые годы
8. концентрированной личностью назвали его - does this mean anything other than the literal 'concentrated personality'?

Very complex structure of text, author tries to be thoughtful and 'wordful' inventing some phrases by the way.

1. "Но тут же охлаждает мысль о единстве формы и содержания." - "охлаждать" here is "to calm down". Meaning is derived from idiomatic phrase "охладить пыл" (to cool heat / to calm down enthusiasm).
2. "Кухонная мудрость" - literally 'some wisdom one heard in the kitchen'. Something simple but wisdom things people say while dining with family or hanging out with friends. In this context it has ironic connotations: "ушибленный кухонной мудростью человек" (man who is striked by kitchen widsom) is something like "man whose thoughts are correct but simple or even narrow-minded".
3. 'твоей этой самой'. In short it is '(with) your passion'. 'Этой самой' can be translated as 'this one' almost literally. So it's something like 'with your... em... you know that I mean...'. Placeholder then you do not want to name things.
4. 'вопрос с подкладкой' - looks like author's own invention of play of words. It is 'trick question'. Widely used idiomatic analog is 'вопрос с подвохом'.
5. 'как в очко, перебор' - 'очко' can be card game where excess (перебор) of game points leads to loosing. 20=winner, 21 or more = looser.
6. author's invention also, so you read it right
7. author's invention. 'призрачные' (illusory) here means author doesn't live in that years and only hears about them.
8. author's invention. that is why it's paired with '20=winner, 21=looser'. That is 'personality of man is too conventrated for them'.

2. оно появилось позже, в пору, когда завскладами цвели махровым цветом по всем пространствам страны

1. "он не знает, с каким хреном редьку едят"
There is russian proverb "хрен редьки не слаще (horseradish is not sweeter than pungent radish)" (Note, there is difference in russian between редис and редька - both are radish in english, but редька is very pungent sorts of) meaning "both discussed alternatives are bad". So, this phrase is reference to "eating horseradish with pungent radish" = "taking both bad alternatives".
By the way, there is dirty rephrase of this proverb: "хер (compare with хрен) редьки не слаще" = "dick is not sweeter than pungent radish", grandfather of my friend of childhood liked to use it.
2. "завскладами цвели махровым цветом". зав-склад is "заведующий складом (chief of warehouse)". "цвести махровым цветом" is idiom "to prosper / to flourish" (literally "to flourish with big blossoms"). In soviet times deficit of goods was common thing and such professions had profits.
3. "отпаивать" here is not derived from "паять / to solder", but "поить / to give drink / water". "отпоить" is perfect form and "отпаивать" is imperfect form. "отпаивать" is process of giving some drink to somebody to bring him to life - in case of shock or something. "отпаивать водкой" - to give somebody vodka to relieve shock.
4. Again, unusual phrase, yes.
