    Nouns after Numbers

На русском языке есть популярное правило относительно существительных после цифр :
    1 + Именительный: один магазин
    2, 3, 4 + Единственое Число родительный : два, три, четыре магазина
5>= + Множественое Число родительный :пять магазинов
Does the rule applies when the noun is preceded by an adjective.
For example today I said "Мы открыли три новые магазины". Я должен был сказать: "Мы открыли три нового магазина"?
Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

You should say: "Мы открыли три новых магазина."

    But why?
The rule says 2,3,4 should be "Единственое Число родительный".
    This is another rule?
Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

Мы открыли три магазина. It is singular genitive.
But "новых" is plural here because here it desribes one object (три магазина) that kinda plural.
I don't remember the exact rule but it exists for this occasion. Collective numeral or something like that.

Мы открыли (один) магазин. Singular nominative.
Мы открыли пять магазинов. Plural genitive.

Новые магазины - accusative or nominative

Well, if you really want to get messed up, here's how it works with adjectives (Wade, 2010):

    1: Singular Nominative.
одна высокая гора, один прекрасный день, одно окно

    2-4: It depends.
mascul. & neuter nouns always go for Genitive Plural forms: "три родных языка"; "три больших окна" (that's a fixed rule)

    Here comes the weirdness:

fem. nouns tend to take the Singular Plural forms: "три бедные сестры"

    Exception 1
fem. noun switches ударение from Singular to Plural: "три высоких горы" (Sg.: гора; Pl: горы)
Exception 2 you are talking about fractionals/decimals "две/три/четыре целых"
Exception 3 you are talking about units in the sense of "по три спелых дыни"

Nouns that actually are adjectives "учёный" etc. stick to the regular rule when it comes to adjectives: 1 = Singular Plural; >2 = Plural Genitive

    >4: Plural Genitive "5 малоизвестных фактов"; "10 прекрасных роз" (ужас);

In regular grammar books, they often talk about how to deal with nouns and don't care much about adjectives in the 2-4 region. At best, they talk about it when numbers are 5 or above. As you can see, there is a good reason why.

The adjective goes for Genetive Plural but the noun goes for Genetive Singular based on the examples you provided Cumulus. Correct?

Yeah, but like I said, be careful when it comes to adjectives and nouns in the realm of numerals.

Три новые ручки лежат на прилавке. Ok.

три высоких горы / спелых дыни sounds also weird.
I'd say "три высокие горы" / "три спелые дыни"
(трех высоких гор / трех спелых дынь)
Этот город раскинулся у подножья трех высоких гор.
Три высокие горы защищают город у их подножья от пронизывающего ветра с моря.

    This statement is self-contradictory.

If you want to know "why" rather than "how" the key phrase is "remnants of Dual number in Russian". But it is a long and complicated topic and hardly helps to memorize the rule.
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

I believe this question was asked at least twice in this forum.
It is reasonable Bob that anything unusual for foreigners to attract attention. This rule is not based on logic but rather to a caprice of the builders of the Russian language who were trying to differentiate their language from other languages.

P.S. Today I wanted to say to a russian friend: "we must ask a company that brings cars from England". It is impossible for me to believe that you Russians have a secret advanced intellectual mechanism in your head that helps you to decide in less than half second that:
    1. the correct verb from the three verbs representing the word bring (принести привести привезти :приносить приводить привозить ) is the привезти / привозить.
    2. Then to decide that it is the несовершенный вид that you should use because the company does this regularly.
    3. And finally that you want the third person: привозит
Based on this I think that it is impossible for me to learn correct Russian in less than 6 - 7 years.
I know that the answer is simple: Some sentences you repeat them so many times that you don't even bother to think of their structure. For me is as if I am trying to solve complicated mathematical exercises in my head all the time
Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

Well if the cars are shipped, then yes, привозит or just возит is the best choice.
But if they buy a car in England, then drive it to their country then it's гоняет or пригоняет or перегоняет машины.
Надо найти фирму, пригоняющую машины из Англии.

You see Medved ... this is exactly what I am telling: You need to think A LOT before you speak!

Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.
