I admit I also looked for that word in dictionaries at no avail, though I guessed the meaning for the context. I just wanted to check what could be the reason for acquiring such a meaning. (In Spanish we say 'bajar', which means 'go down').

It's just that way. If you are reading a long question you can see just by at the beginning that it is a question.

Any language has big questions. But only Spanish feels so "accurate" about that.

I don't know where this comes from. But many people in informal writing tend to omit this, at least here in Catalonia, where inverted marks are not used when writing in Catalan. Let alone when writing emails or sms, where many people tend to contract even words like 'de' or 'por'.
