    использовать - to use

пользоваться/воспользоваться - to make use of, to profit by, avail oneself. also; to enjoy, to have

    -пользоваться случаем-to take an opportunity

казаться/показаться - to seem, to appear

показываться/показаться - to appear, come into view, come into sight. also; to turn up, to show up

-показываться врачу - to see a doctor
-показываться на глаза кому-нибудь - to appear in someone's presence

I think the first pair is quite equal, not much difference in use. There are some minor, but that would be for high level, even native knowledge of Russian. For example: "Я использовал лошадей" - means "I used horses" for something. "Я пользовал лошадей" - "I was a veterinar who treated horses". But that would be minor and quite out of age using.

For the second pair it is more complicated.

"Она кажется высокой" - she seems to be tall.
"Она показалось высокой" - she seemed to be tall (only for the past)
"Она показалась из-за угла" - she stepped out around the the corner

So, in general казаться quite equal to показаться with meaning to seem to be... while показаться sometimes may have meaning to appear. And it seems to me that показываться is really used in The Present, only in The Past and in the Future, unless it is repetetive event, like: "Она показывается из окна, каждый раз когда я паркуюсь около дома". "She appears in the window each time I park my car next to my house".

It doesn't sound Russian. "Она выглядит высокой". It's OK as a fragment, though. "Она кажется высокой, хотя на самом деле она среднего роста". I'd still use "выглядит" here, but "кажется" is OK as well.

I doesn't sound Russian either. There should be a subject here: "Мне oна показалось высокой". Other variants are possible. But "as is" these sentences are direct translations from English and basically don't sound Russian.

ВЕШ, I totally disagree, sounds pretty Russian to me. Yes, your sentences are more completed, but anyhow, my variants are fine as well.

So for appear, so far there is...

    являться
    казаться
    показываться
    выглядеть

Any other words of wisdom will be appreciated

    быть/есть

пример: "эта штука является ключом" или (а то опять ВЕШ меня раскритикует: "эта штука, на самом деле, является ключом".

Значение: this thing is a key.

Пока Vesh нет, покритикую я ;)

    "эта штука является ключом"
"эта штука, на самом деле, является ключом"
    звучит не по-русски :P

    эта штука - ключ
эта штуку на самом деле ключ
    эта штука и есть ключ

является какое-то книжное или формальное слово и со штукой в одном предложении "режет ухо".

But it IS grammatically correct. I can imagine a situation when one can say it. So, guys, native speakers, don't make a situation more complex than it is

I didn't say it's grammatically incorrect! I just said it sounds kinda weird , nothing else.
Yeah the sentence "ты являешься дураком" is also grammatically correct but nobody says it that way.

So do something useful and give a better example of where является should be used then, rather than offering a more natural, but ultimately useless, way to say "this thing is a key".

No-one asked what it doesn't mean.

I ran a Yandex search and there you go:

Компания X является крупнейшим поставщиком лицензированной грузовой автотехники.

Шри Матаджи является истинным духовным учителем.

Квартира не наследуется, поскольку не является частной собственностью.

Университет является многопрофильным высшим учебным заведением.

Важным элементом построения тела является питание.

    It is very different from

    казаться
    показываться
    выглядеть

It is just a formal way of saying "to be" unless it's something else (to report to, to show up):

    Oбязуюсь явиться пред очи твои.
В трехдневный срок гражданину следует явиться на переговоры о трудоустройстве с работодателем.

I hope everyone is happy now.

I said it's a formal word. Examples? OK:

Прослеженная в составе окись фосфора является признаком использования золы в качестве сырья.

Внимание к развитию своего персонала является признаком здорового бизнеса с серьезными намерениями.

Появление сухой пыли на внутренней поверхности крышки прибора - является признаком того, что воду в аквафильтре необходимо заменить.

No-one asked what it doesn't mean.
And I didn't explain what it means.

    что тут грамматически неправильно?

"этот черепок является кусочком древнеиранского кувшина эпохи Ахаменидов".

    Что в этом предложении неправильно?

Всякую ерунду можно написать грамматически правильно, но нужно ли? Я уверена, что ты не скажешь "Он является дураком", а скажешь просто "Он дурак."
Вот первое, что выскочило в яндексе: "В любом споре один является дураком, а другой подлецом... ". С этим утверждением я тоже не согласна.
