Hello everyone.
I would greatly appreciate some help in translating this letter to my grandmother. Thank you!
-----------------
Dear Grandmother,
The beginning of a letter is always so dreadfully difficult to place on paper! It seems that such a wealth of history needs exposition, but some inertia keeps it hidden within the confines of my mind. Well now I may begin…
So much has happened since we last talked Grandmother! In the beginning of summer, I travelled with a colleague to _______ to participate in an engineering design competition. Unfortunately we did not win, but the experience was nonetheless a worthy one. Upon my return from that beautiful harbour in eastern Canada, I attempted to find an appointment as a temporary engineer with results that were more dismal than I had expected. The economic tribulations of the world seemed, with little mercy, to affect Toronto too. And so I spent the summer occupied with other things, which I’ll now explain.
Several months ago my car, which Papa poured much effort maintaining over the years, seemed to be swallowing its last liters of gasoline. So I searched for a new vehicle and found something reasonable. It’s not what I had hoped I will afford after finishing that grueling first degree, but it will manage. Buying an old car was itself an experience, and I had my first attempt at bargaining! Since the purchase, I’ve had to make one repair, which was certainly good practice. Otherwise, it seems like a promising machine.
Quite more serious news is that Lisa and I just purchased a new house. Perhaps in July, I began looking at homes and learning the principles behind making such a purchase. It turned out that there is current construction close to Papa and Mama and Lisa’s parents. We found the perfect home for beginning our life together, so we made the arrangements and placed an offer a few weeks ago. The house should be built by _______. Of course this implies that after we return from our honeymoon, we will have to live with one of our family members for a few months. We need your prayers Grandmother, such that everything goes well in this important effort.
So in talking about our successes, I should not refrain from mentioning my failures! I had so many weeks to plan our honeymoon, but the effort seemed so arduous that I could never muster the strength to complete it! Rest assured, Grandmother, that we will visit you next year after we are wedded. We cannot wait to see you, and be comforted in your tears and arms. I hope that this long-overdue visit will be at the end of _____. (And when our plans our complete, I will no doubt inform you!)
Before I finish, let me address the question of what I am currently studying. In North America, engineers can have three different academic degrees; from lowest to highest, they are: Bachelors of Engineering (what I currently possess from my studies at _______), Masters of Science (what I am current beginning to study at _______, and Doctorate in Philosophy. In my studies, I am to take several courses dealing with my research and also compete a research thesis. My research regards science that will hopefully assist in building prosthetics or other technology for the disabled and impaired. I will mainly be dealing with children who lack full control of their bodies, and listen to signals from their bodies to determine what they’re trying to communicate. Hopefully I can finish this degree by the end of next year.
Well that is all for now.
Stray strong and pray fervently, dear Grandmother. I am sure you remember that Christ on the Cross is our greatest example of noble and blessed suffering. Await us impatiently!
Sincerely,
