    It is not so simple. Her father was an alcoholic and beat her. We took her in three days ago, but she is still afraid and wants to return to her father. I don't understand why.

    Это не так простой. Её отец был алкоголиком и бил ее. Мы принимали её три дня тому назад. Но она все ещё боится от нас и хочет возвращаться к её отцу. Я не понимаю почему.
    Какая разница, умереть богатым или бедным?

    Какой толк от богатства если ты не счастлив.

    So the proper Russian way to say this is as follows.

    Это не так просто. Её отец был алкоголиком и бил её. Мы приняли к себе её три дня тому назад. Но она всё ещё боится нас и хочет вернуться к своему отцу. Я не понимаю почему.
    Какая разница, умереть богатым или бедным?

    Какой толк от богатства если ты не счастлив.

    I don't know how right this is, but when I think, "take in", I think of остановиться. Maybe something like, "Мы пустили её остановиться у нас." but again I don't know for certain.

    Here "остановиться" doesn't fit. It is mostly used when someone comes to your area for his/her own purposes(for a while) and lives at your place during this time. When you take in a child who is in trouble and has nowhere to live "взять к себе" is the best variant.
