Is that cosidered a "Southern" thing? Because I say "listen up" too. Must have sounded stupid.... that is until I say something like ... "listen up" and then all my credibility goes out the window and I am forever labeled as a dumb hick from the south!
Hi all I am of Ukie descend a native Argentinean speak Spanish or rather Castillan. I also speak other Latin languages fluently as well as Aussie or Cockney British English.
Comingback to the reason of me coming here is even when I can read a bit and understand spoken Russian I often confuse words and expressions with Ukrainian. So I am here to brush up and learn more, that is my interest.
Ой, и я туда же! Как оказалось, вместе с Солженицыным и Э. Лимоновым.Originally Posted by gRomoZeka

Being a moviegoer you must have seen “Period of Adjustment” with Jane Fonda. She had an accent there I liked. as much as I liked the film itself. Isn’t it a southern and her natural one?Originally Posted by rockzmom

Yes, "listen up" and if you do the entire, "listen up ya'll" is most certainly a Southern thing. You would fit in right'chere (or "right here" for those of you non-southerners) down south! No troubles at all.
Alex, I am not certain what Jane's natural accent is, I will do me some diggin' on that there one (note, also southern speak here).Originally Posted by alexB
As for her accent in the movie, I agree, it is a very pleasant one to the ear; unfortunately, not one for the business world. If she walked into an office for an interview anywhere outside of the south, it would not matter how well educated she would be, she would be looked down upon just because of her accent and thought of as dumber than another equal or lower candidate for the same job who had a northern accent and maybe even one that went to a less prestigious college. As stupid as this sound, it is true. This is also true of New Jersey and Long Island, New York accents.
These two very strong accents will knock you down a peg or two on the intelligence scale as soon as you open your mouth. A number of people actually try to get rid of both southern and New Jersey/Long Island accents just for this very reason.
I only speak two languages, English and bad English.
