And here go the remaining idioms:

1) Что такое валять дурака?

to play fool, to waste time on somethig stupid

2) Что такое тянуть резину?

to drag the execution of some task, to hesitate, to protract, to do things slowly as if you were stretching rubber

3) Что такое вопрос на засыпку?

"a very difficult question"
It has originally derived from the student's slang. If a professor asks something difficult during the exam, and the student fails to answer, they say "Он засыпался" (to put it more literally - he was spouted up with questions. So вопрос на засыпку means a question, which the asker knows you'd fail to answer to.

5) Кто может наломать дров?

наломать дров - to blunder, to make a mistake (usually with some bad consequences).

- Ох, и наломал ты дров... (~You've got yourself in a deep trouble).

6) Кто и что закладывает за воротник?

We say this about drunkards. Закладывать за воротник means simply to drink alcohol. Much. (You actually put alcohol through the collar when you drink ).

Не совсем: делать что-то, которое не было сделано раньше. Например:
"Pushing the envelope" is taking something to its next level of development. eg the scram jet is pushing the envelope of jet propulsion technology which has remained basically unchanged at the top of its envelope curve for many years.

- Выболтать секрет, проговориться.
Не совсем: Хотя это часть ответа, тоже можно просто говорить всё, о чем-то другой человек не знает. как будто это было секрет (но это не должно быть секретом). это выражение происходило от того, когда ты врезаешь мешок боб, все проливают.
Например: "come on, spill the beans on how you met your wife"

to spill the beans is not the same as blurt out things then?

Nope, not necessarily. Blurt out is saying something you shouldn't (like Novosyeltsev: "мымра!") and is usually very short. Spill the beans implies a lot of information.

Тогда по-русски это может быть примерно так:

В милиции его хорошенько прижали и он выложил всё про свою банду. (The policemen pressed him hard and he spilled all (the?) beans about his gang)

Ну что там у тебя, выкладывай. (All right, talk).

And another moment - I though that you can only spill some liquid, not such loose things as beans.

Oh yeah, anything in a cup or container can be spilled Technically you could spill elephants if you had a big enough container and were drunk enough!

I see, my confusion is probably because in Russian there are two separate verbs: разливать (for liquids) and рассыпать (for dry things).

In the America: There is only one interpretation of the expression: "Spill the beans". It means: "Confess", "Tell the truth", "Let me know what you are thinking". It's quite a simple and clear thought. The amount of information is irrelevant.

This program is obviously flawed in that I was allowed to submit the same reply three times in a row!
