try watching 12 too. i'd be interested to see what you think of it as many of the russians here didnt seem to like it (i made a thread about it ages ago).
it's a remake of 12 angry men, but make sure you watch it with subs and hold out for a good copy (it's dialogue heavy so a bad translation would wreck it)
you can download it in Russian but i haven't found a subtitle file for it (yet)

Are you talking about the 2007 version http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488478/

That should be interesting as I have seen the original 12 Angry Men with that great cast including Henry Fonda, E.G. Marshall, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden...

Where my dad used to work, they made them watch it. So when it came out on VHS to the public, he made me watch it!

    and so on

They all are just botch in comparison with old Soviet cinema. I saw those "Watches", the both of them, and I don't remember anything what happened there. I think I forgot them 3 or 4 days after I saw them. I hardly made out any plot line in them.
In "12", a lot of details of the plot are not verisimilar. Really a lot. All the movie looks like action one, not like a movie about people and their fortunes (as it positions itself).
Among all post-Soviet Russian movies, the best one is "Кукушка" (The Cuckoo), in my opinion. Really great film.

seems like most of the russians here dont like films that were made post soviet union. were they really so great or is maybe nostalgia at work here.
burnt by the sun was also good and you should be able to get it with a good translation too

I am too young for nostalgia of that kind No, it's just an objective thing: Soviet cinema was great, it was true ART, it was about people and for people. And the modern Russian cinema is nothing but poor attempts at Holliwood.

What do you mean - "made them watch it"? Was it a "an offer he can't refuse"? Why?

Sounds like it was a requirement of his job.

Yes, that's what I thought, but then I thought what kind of job that might be. I would understand it if it were film-making industry but if it were jury system I would be surprised.

Absolutely correct! I don't recall if it was everyone say in management, his department or in the Agency; however, he was required to watch the film as part of his job.

It was to help them understand how people are different and bring their own views into situations and how people may not actually be objective even when they should be or you think that they might be.

In the film, each “man” in the jury has a reason for finding the boy guilty except for one, juror number 8. Yet, their reasons don’t all have to do with the evidence that was presented to them in the court room. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_Angry_Men

I don’t know if you have seen the original movie; however, if you haven’t it is a little dry, but I encourage you to watch it. It did help me when I first started out in the work place as I was in Human Resources. Office Politics can be a bear sometimes and it helped me to take the time to listen to all sides of a story and then even try to dig further before reaching a judgment about a situation. So in this case, “father knew best” so to speak…

I've seen the original and I remember wondering at the end if that boy was actually a murderer or not, though as far as I understand it wasn't the point at all, it was all about how to deal with people, so I see how it could be relevant to management.

Re: Favorite movie/book phrases or quotes??

E-Learner...So, you saw the original 12 Angry Men... did you by any chance see the Russian remake that Lt. Columbo and Olya are speaking about?

If so, what did you think about it?

How did you think it compared to the original?

If not, would you be willing to watch it and then post a review???

Also, anyone one else who might have seen the American and Russian versions? I am interested in learning your thoughts on these two films as I don’t know how many films are out there that fit this category (American and Russian versions of same film).

Does anyone know of other films like this one???

Lt. Columbo, what about you… did you see the American version??? If not... go watch it (with your girlfriend of course)... and then post your thoughts... please

I know Lt. Columbo already had a thread about this film; however, most of it was in Russian and I simply could not understand it. Please accept my apologizes if you are repeating your comments in English now.

Re: Favorite movie/book phrases or quotes??

I have seen the American original version and for me it's better than Russian one. I can't write a review since I don't remember it well, I just remember it was more or less a good movie and it was MUCH better than Mikhalkov's "12".

I intended to do that for quite a long time now but never braced myself for it because the last film by Mikhalkov that I've seen was to me a complete waste of time, I don't even remember it's name or what it was about except that it was "patriotic", or at least Russian media hailed it as such.
I was going to watch "12" as I had already seen "12 Angry Men" and was just curious. Maybe I will, after all.
If not, would you be willing to watch it and then post a review???
Not much hope for a review. I never wrote them and I'm not a great fan of cinema anyway. A couple of words, maybe.

Re: Favorite movie/book phrases or quotes??

Sorry rockzmom. In my own post I said that the best russian language film I've seen is The Return (Возвращения), which came out in 2003. It's my favourite for a few reasons: the acting is great, the scenery gorgeous, and it has a touching story.

    I highly recommend it.

Le Film d'Art.

There are no useful (even more so fantastic) information, just a chat (except ski-ops's post, of course).
