Thread: My Three Questions

1. About books, films, etc. We have "prequel" which tells us about the events prior to the main ones. And how can we call the item which summarizes everything that was shown and said and discovers some things that lead to the very end of the story so we know everything is known and no continuation will follow? I don't mean "sequel"!

2. About crayfishes. What is better to say: they have claws, hands or pincers? And are pincers only plural?

3. About cats. Are there a few ways to call them up saying like in Russian (кис-кис-кис) or only one? Which ones?

1. Maybe "postquel"???
2. Most people say "claws", never "hands". I think "pincers" is probably the best term but it is a rare word. "pincers" is only plural.
3. You can say "Here kitty, kitty, kitty". Never say "Here pussy, pussy, pussy" (Edit: unless you are talking to a prostitute)

1. Uh, dunno really. "The last in the series" says it. I can't think of anything better offhand.

2. "Claw" and "pincer" are both fine for this, and, as you can see, there is a singular form of "pincers". You would not say they had hands, unless you were being... cute.

3. Kissy noises work, or finger-clicking. Not that it really matters, I mean, it's just a noise to attract their attention .

Concerning "hands", I came across it in my English-Russian dictionary and was surpirsed at the following entry:

передняя лапа или нога ( животных ); конечность ( у четвероруких животных ); клешня ( у ракообразных )

1, Interlude or interposition, if it happens during said book, film etc. Unless this is for a literature class, you have my permission to forget this stupid word and use the space in your brain for something useful.
2, answered, claws implies something larger like on a North Atlantic lobster
3, anything to do with food

Oops. You can say "pincer". It just sounded awkward to me at first. Like I said, it is a rare word.

Mmmmm... I don't think that quite captures "discovers some things that lead to the very end of the story so we know everything".

No, no, no. Epilogue is inisde. I mean a self-sufficient item having cover-it-all feature.

It's even like an antonym to prequel.

1. About books, films, etc. : I don't really understand what you are getting at. Can you provide us with an example in film or books? Cliff-notes is my guess at this point?:P

2. About crayfishes: Claws is fine. Pincer(s) sound more educated but this is a bit less frequent. The TECHNICAL term is "cheliped." You won't encounter this in typical speech -- I doubt any of the native English-speakers here know this term (I didn't until a minute ago ).

"Pus-pus-pus" or a sort of whistling sound like "sw-sw-sw-sw-sw." In any cae, most of the time they're going to ignore you anyway because they're horrid, insolent animals.

Pincers? Akward? How so? I always would say pincers, but then I don't talk about crabs much...

Summary (n.) = recap, recapitulation, run-down, run-through, summation, summing-up, wrap-up.
Synopsis and epitome came to mind too.

I'm sure we'd all like to hear the "correct" answer..

I almost went with summary or recap, too, but he seems to want to know what the actual book is called. I frankly don't really know as something like that exists in English. If you're advertising something in the media, they use terms like "epic conclusion" to let you know that a) this is the climax of the whole series, b)it's the end, and thus c)you need to buy it/see it. But again, I think he wants some actual literary term that I don't know exists. Actually, lets try this: Rtyom what would you call it in Russian? Maybe we can work backward from that...

I don't see anything unusual with the word "pincer", but I've never heard of a... "cheliped".

Unfortunately, I can't think of a Russian word either...

why won't the prologue to the sequel work? Antonym of prequel, you get a summary and some stuff you probably weren't aware of...

The obvious solution here is to simply invent a word, for both languages.
