Как перевести фразу грамматически правильно?

Кое-как доковыляв на нашей колымаге до города, мы обнаружили, что высосали слишком много бензина.

"we wasted" или "we had wasted"?

По моему waste не тот глагол. Ведь мы попали в город, как хотели. Как насчёт

We somehow managed to make it to the town in our jalopy, but we found that we had used up [Or: it (the car) had drunk up] far too much gas.

Вот лучшая фраза!-- it had guzzled way too much gas.
У нас фразеологический оборот gas guzzler, кот. означает автомобиль, кот. «пьет» много бензина.

итого:
We somehow managed to make it to the town in our jalopy, but we found out it was a real gas guzzler.

I don't think "wasted" fits either... whether it was a waste or not, is a subjective matter. The fact is just that they had used too much gas.

Maybe (and this is just a variation, for variation sake): After somehow managing to reach the city in this peace of junk, we noticed that we had used way too much gas.

1) make it to town - никогда не сталкивался с таким значением make
2) way too much gas. - нужен ли артикль перед way? (the way too much)
3) We somehow managed to make it to the town in our jalopy - здесь причастный оборот "пропал"
4) Wasted - мне кажется, это только когда понапрасну. Как же мы можем понапрасну расходовать бензин, когда нам в город надо!

2) NEVER! it is not a noun in the case, it is an adverb!

- How much?
- Way too much!

- When did you arrive at the stadium?
- Way too late to get tickets.

4) correct, "wasted" isn't the word of choice in this context.

There is no such thing as "gramatically more correct", it is either correct or it isn't. Especially in this case!
