    You have to think: "I wish you a happy Independence Day" - "Ya zhelayu vam schastlivogo dnya nezavisimosti"

    The verb "zhelat'" is with genetive. What you wish someone is in genetive, whom you wish in dative.

    You also say "spokojnoj nochi" (Goodnight) in genetive, because the "I wish you"-part is assumed.
