Thread: 1st day vowel pronouncation questions

On MasterRussian's vowel pronouncation page, I'm not clear on a couple of points.

On the second page, the pronouncation of И is described as "И as in meet". However, the summary chart at the bottom says И is "e as in pet". Which is it?

I'm also unclear on the difference between Я and Ё. The latter is described as the "yo in yonder", but I pronounce yonder as "yahn-der", which would sound exactly identical to Я. Maybe I pronounce "yonder" differently than the author because I'm from the deep south

Any clarification would be appreciated.

The summary chart is describing the sound for the letter when it is stressed.

Я - 'ya'
Ё - 'yo'

I think 'yonder' there was a poor choice for a word.

Я as in "yuck" is wrong (American pronounciation), unless you pronounce the first syllable like "ya" as in "yacht".

We could sit here all day and try to explain how things are pronounced, but its probably best to either move this to the "Audio Lounge" or for you to check out the audio samples on the other parts of this site.

И is e as in pet - WRONG!

It should be Э for e as in pet.

The Я sound is closer to the Ya in 'Yahoo', not the British 'Yuh-hoo' way of saying it.

To be honest, Yahoo isn't a very British thing to say. Unless you are talking about the website, in which case, I'd say it like

Well I was trying to think of an American example, I haven't heard that way of saying it because of the reason you stated.

The reason why we don't like you using Yuck as an example is:

1. It only applies to this Midwest pronunciation. The world doesn't stop outside America you know.
2. We like using a Ya wordы, because Я at the end of the day, is Йа.

Well I agree with "don't like" more than with "is wrong".
Anyway, English language is a joint enterprise, and our side of the pool owns enough stock in it to vote down anything we disagree with.

Correction: should be ee as in peet of course!

I think "Pete" would be a good example there. I can't imagine anyone pronouncing it differently (in any English accent) to "peet".
