The difference is purely stylistic. You can use either.

ё - всегда ударная.

No, it starts in September

The correct sentence is "... в январе"

The first one is correct. днями - plural.

slices

piece = кусок, кусочек

7. Он съел ещё ломтик хлеба - What does it mean?

He ate another slice of bread ("He ate more bread" fits better, I think)

Дядя, папа, дедушка, братишка и другие слова, которые обознают мужчин, но заканчиваются на -а/-я, имеют окончания как у слов женского рода на -а/-я.
Dativ: Дедушке, папе, братишке... маме, сестре.

Я занимался весь день.
P.S. Хотя мне не очень понятно в английском: если порядок слов фиксированный, то как различаются, допустим, вот эти две фразы:
"Я занимался весь день" и "Я весь день занимался"?

I'm afraid, you can't use instrumental case in this particular case.

Duration phrases usually use the accusative case.

I studied in the morning. Я занимался утром.
I studied all morning. Я занимался всё утро.

I was in Moscow in August. Я был в Москве в августе.
I was in Moscow for a whole month. Я был в Москве целый месяц.

I crammed endings for five hours. Я окончания зубрил пять часов.
(пять is accusative here)

Why do you insist on using the instrumental case?

You use the instrumental case with the parts of the day (утро, день, вечер, ночь) and the seasons to express WHEN you did something.

To say HOW LONG (duration) you use the accusative case:

Я занимался днём = I studied during the day
Я весь день занимался = I studied for a whole day

Since the following sentence is in the plural instrumental form, I was trying to see if I understand this case by trying to use the singular instrumental form. Я занимался целыми днями. I studied for days on end. As you can see, I'm still quite confused.

I think it would be best to avoid the instrumental case here, correct or not, because it could create confusion with the verb занимался. The reason I say that is because заниматься takes the instrumental case itself (e.g. я занимаюсь спортом - I'm involved with sport), so Я занимался целыми днями could look like "I was involved with whole days."

That may or may not be a relevant point. :P

Sort of, but not really, as context would indicate that целыми днями is the time period and not what the verb refers to.

True, but personally I don't like it when verbs which take cases other than the accusative (заниматься - instrumental, позволять - dative, etc.) don't have a noun in said case to hook onto, although there's nothing wrong with it.

What you said doesn't make sense. Verbs that require the accusative case (transitive verbs) almost always require an object. You said you don't like using verbs that take cases other than the accusative (these are called the oblique cases, by the way) without a noun... but they are the only verbs you can use and often have to use without nouns...


e.g.

Я 4 года изучаю русский язык - ОК
Я изучал в Москве - Incorrect, because изучать is a transitive verb and thus requires an object in the accusative case.

Я учился в Москве - OK, because учиться сan take a noun (in the dative), or not... e.g. Я учился английскому языку в Москве...

How else would you you say "I studied for 2 hours" in Russian without using a verb that takes an oblique case without a on object.

Я занимался 2 часа.
You don't like that sentence, because заниматься doesn't govern a noun in the instrumental?

For me "Я занимался целыми днями" may sound as "...involved..." only in corresponding context. In all rest cases - study, exercise.

Yes, exactly. I know it's 100% grammatically correct, but I'm not fond of phrasing things like that myself. I'm odd; don't worry about it. :P
