No, you misunderstood, I meant that I'll remember the word "ныть" by remembering the word "knit" in English

ныть is closer to whine or to complain or to cry (producing tears and being very loud at the same time) (literally is to be painful and making you feel the pain continuosly and every second)
конючить - to complain or ask about something continuously in a very annoying way

It's up to you to decide but if you asked me I'd say that конючить is stronger than just ныть

e.g You would rather say ныть if a person's been whining (complaining etc) for not long, but if a person's been whining (complaining etc) for long (like all day, all weak, everytime etc) you'd rather say конючить

Yeah, and ныть doesn't include to ask in its meaning but конючить does so if someone is asking you annoyingly to do something you say конючить not ныть

No
канючить comes from a word канюк - Common Buzzard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . That bird has particularly annoying call So хватит канючить is more like stop pester me.
quit bitchin' would be хватить ныть or хватит ворчать.

I would have suggested that the word "nit" would have also worked as a mnemonic device for ныть! ("nit" = гнид -- the egg of a вошь, "louse")

Because "to pick nits" (literally искать и снимать гнидов) can colloquially mean ныть о неважных недостатках/пороках ("to whine about unimportant flaws/defects").

Not that I've ever been guilty of that...

P.S. I'm pretty sure that придираться/придраться can generally work as a Russian translation for "to nitpick" (and also to translate Yiddish kvetch, which has been widely popularized in US English by generations of Jewish comedians). So in certain contexts, хватит придираться could mean "quit bitchin!" At least if you're talking about kvetchy, nitpicky forms of bitching...

P.S. One other general-purpose expression I'd recommend to Valda if she doesn't already know it is заткнись! (which is an imperative form, so if you're addressing two or more persons, it's заткнитесь!)

Note that заткнуть is "to close a container" and заткнуть бутылку пробкой is "to stopper a bottle with a cork."

Thus, the reflexive заткнись! means something very near to "Oh, put a cork in your mouth!" -- i.e., "Close your piehole, quit your bitchin', STFU." (It's very rude, though not obscene.)

Throbert, заткнись works in exactly the same way as shut up (yourself).
Also it's гнида (feminine), (literally искать и снимать гнид)
nitpick = докапываться, прикапываться, придираться, yes.

Medved -- I've been told that замолчи = "shut up!", while заткнись is more like "shut the HELL up, dammit!", and perhaps also has the connotation "...или тебе покажу, где раки зимуют."

In other words, same meaning, but stronger!
