Grammatically how is explained.
I can recall only one situation when negation automaticly uses genetive case: it's construction with the word "нет", when "нет" means that something doesn't exist.
1) У меня нет дома и семьи.
2) Нет такого человека, который не ужаснулся бы при виде этого монстра.

In other situations cases depend on roles, which nouns play in a sentence. In the poem "радость", "печаль" and "слезы" are subjects, and all together do one action, they "не будят"* (doesn't wake), so we use nominative case here. However if we make a sentence in wich these words are objects, we should use another cases.
1) Во время совместной жизни с тобой я не знала [чего? - genetive case] ни радости, ни печали, ни слёз.
2) Казалось, мой отец был напрочь лишён эмоций. Он не мог познакомить меня [с чем? - instrumental case] ни с радостью, ни с печалью, ни со слезами.

*Don't to confuse "не будят" (doesn't wake) with "не будут" (will not).
