Спрашивать (imperfective) - a repeated or continuous action.
"Я спросил сегодня у менялы..." -- "I have asked a money-changer today" (once)
"Сколько раз я спрашивал..." -- "How many times did I ask..." (multiple times)
"Я хочу спрашивать" can be translated as "I want to be asking"

Мне кажется. что прочитать - ближе к прочитать вслух, а прочесть - прочесть про_себя.Между прочитать и прочесть никакой разницы нет. =)
