I believe многие is used when you want to make a generalization.

I agree, that's why so many people give up learning it.

One of the things that makes Russian so difficult is that you can't simply sit down with a dictionary and try to read something. Every word you look up isn't in the dictionary because you must look up the nominative form.

When I'm on the computer, I like to use ABBYY Lingvo 8.0 (I know there's a newer one out now). This is a very good dictionary, but you can't give it a declined Russian word, so you can still run into problems.

You have to first figure out whether the word is a verb, noun, adjective, or adverb. Is it in present, past, or future tense? Is is a reflexive verb? Even if you can do all that, there are many endings to know.

The latest two words I couldn't find in Lingvo were:
довелось and скачать. I think probably довелось means something like "possibly" and скачать looks similar to сказать so maybe it's related.

But beyond those words is the bigger question of what is the method one should use to find Russian words? I'd love to find a good dictionary like ABBYY Lingvo that could take the declined form. Don't you think a computer dictionary should be able to do that?

seems довелось has no analogy in English

if I chance to see her again — если мне доведётся увидеть её снова

скачать means download (it's a new 'computer word' and dictionaries just might not have it)

I think довелось can be often translated as happen.
Мне довелось её встретить. - I happened to meet her.

As I replied to kwatts59 (in bad Russian I don't think that the Russian language can be any harder to learn than the majority of languages: even young Russian kids are often almost fluent What I really like about Russian is its unfailing logic. In England it is common to say, "I don't think I understand". In Russian I must say, "I think that I do not understand". The latter seems to me to be logically correct and the former incorrect Still, I will agree that learning a foreign language is always incredibly difficult if you are not actually living in the foreign country.

@wemagor - I use ABBYY Lingvo 9.0 and http://online.multilex.ru/ to check for the stress points. Lingvo has its faults: there are many English mistakes; there is generally no ё (only е); no stress points; and more grammar would be great. I don’t know about 8.0, but $15 for 9.0 - It's the business. I realise that if I want to check something properly then I must use a good dictionary.

Lingvo 9.0:
довестись - доводиться; - довестись ; have occasion (to), chance (to), happen (to) нам не довелось встретиться — we did not have occasion to meet

WTF are you guys talking about? I just double-cliked on the world "довелось", hit Ctrl+C+C, and it took me straight to довести. The listing says "have occasion (to), chance (to), happen (to) нам не довелось встретиться — we did not have occasion to meet." As for скачать, strangely enough, it isn't in there; it takes you to скачивать, but they don't give you the meaning "to download", which is the context I usually see it in. Anyhow, most of the time Lingvo is pretty good about taking different forms of words and giving you the one it has listed. The only time it doesn't sometimes is with different forms of adjectives. A dictionary is only as good as the person using it. And BTW, with any language you will have to look up words in whichever form they are listed in the dictionary.

довелось - happened, had happened, meaning that the person had occasion, chance to do something and did it.

скачать = to download, literally.

In this case I think you'd say
многие маленькие дети умеют говорить....
to avoid having to decide whether the verb is sg. or pl.

Да, устаревший, но всё равно русский. По крайней мере интересно увидеть откуда что пришло. А у Ожегова нет ни скачивать, ни скачать, только скатать, где оно во 2 знач. сдуть (прост.).
Действительно, мы таки не говорили скачать, а говорили скатать. Ошибочка вышла. Сейчас пойду исправлю.

The better to say многие дети instead of много детей and with маленькие.
