    saying "i love you"

I would like to say "I love you" to my adopted 2 yr. old ukrainian nephew. I do not know any Russian so I really need help with pronounciation. Any other appropriate phrases would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!!!

well yea,ya tebya lyublyu but you say it "loobloo", if you arn't good with the transliteration. hmm you could say like "rad tebya vidyet", wich is nice to see you. and of course prevyet "hey!" and kak dela "how are you doing" kak tiy pazhiyvaesh "how are you feeling" (more or less) but i forgot most of the greatings i learned, because i never use them, and uhm hes ukrainian, so he might not speak russian.

Yes, if he's Ukrainian and only 2 years old, are you sure he knows Russian and not Ukrainian? Either way I guess he probably won't understand it.

By the way, what Anna said is correct but more often it is written Я люблю тебя. This isn't really helpful for showing you how to say it to him though.

Just short of embarrassing myself by recording my voice for the public, I can see only one way to explain it properly for you to mimic.

http://drlight.multics.org/russian/jaljubljutebja.mp3 (this is from a Liube song)

Ignoring the husky voice and sing-song way in which it is said, this will give you a good idea of how to pronounce the words.

There is only one way to settle this--and that is in the darkened, blood-stained arena of Googlefight.

well for one you can't just look at which one's more common on the net because what's written on the net is not necesarily a mirror of the spoken language.

Perhaps the actual russians should just tell us which one they think is used more/sounds more natural.

It probably doesn't matter to the kid either way, but now it is simply interesting to me to figure out which way sounds more natural. My books said that "Я тебя люблю" is more natural sounding, but it's much better to hear from native speakers themselves.

I wonder how native speakers of Russian found this site anyway...

perhaps i will ask one of my SEVERAL russian friends FROM russia tomarrow, who by the way are real russians. but yea i doubt the kid even has a great grasp of the language anyway, if he started speaking english now he'd probly forget all his ukrianian by the time hes 10.

Guys, these conversations would be a lot easier if everyone just always unquestioningly accepted what I said.

ok the kid is 2 years old and dosent speak english, russian or Ukrainian (or at least not in full), you could say я тебя люблю or у меня есть толстую красную кошку and it wouldent make a difference, unless he is one of those super babies who also happens to be fully buffed on his russian grammar.

...Russian grammar, which does not use the accussative in "у меня есть..."

    Try the nominative!

It's quite logical, you don't need books for it.

doesnt matter how hard it gets always keep trying because the harder it is the sweeter it tastes at the end.

Let me do some corrections too.

V, откуда ты именно??? Ты русский?
Если ты не русский, почему ты всегда исправляешь всех?
Знаешь, иногда ты не прав, но всё-таки исправляешь.
И почему ты так очень любишь Америку? (it is not a mistake, but word "тоже" looks not very nice here)

Америка ошибается и нарушает международные законы
Даже я так думаю и я тут родился

    Только спрашиваю (or "просто спрашиваю")

Между прочим "у меня толстая красная кошка", по-моему, будет правильно
    Пока

As you can see his "location" contains word "Sweden". Maybe doing corrections helps him learn Russian that he knows well yet. And even if he will be not right I think his mistakes will be corrected too. So I don't think it is a big problem. If you're just learning Russian I can say your Russian is perfect (at least in this post).

"I have a thick red cat" will be "у меня есть толстая красная кошка". The difference between "У меня…" and "У меня есть…" is when you're saying "у меня есть…" you are saying about things that you can separate from you and put on a shelf or give to other man. So sentense "у меня толстая красная кошка" makes sense but looks incomplete. If you are speaking about things that more or less are a part of you then you can use both variants. But this part of rule is not very strong and there are many exceptions and situations so I'm not sure that I will be able to clarify it completely.
