Most foreign-language teachers are a) non-native and b) nazis. Don't even think about using modern expressions or, God forbid, slang.

My teacher would stop me midsentence for saying чё.

Then we would not be able to talk I guess, because I say "чё" all the time . In Siberia it's a norm, in a worst case scenario you can get punched for saying "што" (are you a Muscovite, mate?)
