And no, I don't know why Kaliningrad was a choice. I've never been there, so I can't comment.

I think Бармалей wanted someplace very different from Petersburg or Moscow.

Personally, I'd pick one of the rural, less-traveled cities, find a good tutor for study, and sit out the winter months with the locals.
In this case, anywhere above the Polar circle will do
Well, I don't know what to say. I want to say thanks to the Academy, to Mama, to Papa and to my dog. I love you all.

Whoa! Slap me with a wet noodle!

I forgot about Паша Дяди! Uncle Pasha!

He and his ex-wife are excellent contact points in Moscow, especially in emergencies, and they have a dacha near Staritsa which they could rent to you and I think arrange tutoring, as well as contacts in other cities and towns, including Siberia. He or Olesya might be a good source to help you with your decision where to go.

I'll personally vouch for them. Olesya's a friend of Tanya, one of my best friends. Olesya and Pasha both have very good reputations and are very reliable.

Thanks for the links. This is what Uncle Pasha does (in his own words):

Yep, that's Uncle Pasha! He has a very caustic sense of humor.

But I'll vouch for him. Паша (Paul) is very reliable, speaks fluent English, and can be trusted. He's a good contact in Moscow. As is Olesya... she has a much 'warmer' personality, and she also speaks fluent English.

Both are very experienced at navigating Moscow and Russian bureaucracy.

Olesya's site was pretty cool, if a bit dated -- I would LOVE to purchase a plane ticket from Moscow to Kazan for 30 bucks, but I doubt that's still current.

Nowadays, the cheapest round trip is $217:

Yep, Olesya's site hasn't been updated in awhile. She's still there though.

But I didn't see the link for Moscow/Kazan, 30 bucks. Was this on Olesya's or Paul's site?

Hers. It's under a link for something like "sample travel fares" under trans-siberian?

I also voted for Novosibirsk. I suggest staying not in Novosibirsk simply as such but rather in Akademgorodok ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akademgorodok ), which is some 20 miles away from the central part of Novosibirsk. Although somewhat separated from the rest of the city, it is a part of the Novosibirsk municipality, if memory serves me right. That's where the NSU is actually located, there are many research centers, it is better ecologically and people are on average more educated and used to foreigners. In other words, they won't be fainting or running away if they hear an accent.

On the other hand, N-sk is kinda far, and there won't be any historical places to visit if you are into that. Don't go there in the middle of winter unless you ski a lot.

А почему не предпримешь учебу на Новой Земле! Там есть множество интересных исторических сайтов для просмотра, к примеру, место детонации самой большой в истории мира ядерной бомбы!
