What's the point of the Russian Tourist Invitation ?

I mean why do I have to get one of these?

Is it for the money? I'm already paying a huge sum for the visa!!

To my knowledge hotel reservation is enough. Contact embassy though, I'm not 100% sure.

Well, unless you have some letter of invitation you won't be able to get your Visa. Just buy one from one of the many online sites that offer them - even without hotel reservations I beleive.

By the way, I don't think sleeping on the street in Russia is a good idea.

Well, call Belgium Foreign Ministry (or how you call it there), pretend you want your Russian friend to visit you, and ask what documents s/he needs to get her/his visa. You'll be surprised.

I think it can be summed up in one simple phrase:
"It's all about the Benjamins, baby!"

Well its a remnent of the Soviet days, when they didn't just let anyone in the country.

Now maybe it is just for money. Why are you paying a huge sum for the visa? Mine cost

It's not just limited to the ex-Soviet countries. Turkey had the same thing when I went there, the only difference is that I could buy the visa at the airport.

Are we talking about invitations or visas themselves? What I'm saying is, in the days of the USSR, as I am aware, someone in America couldn't just think "I am gonna go to the USSR" and buy and ticket and go.

60 euros + 30 for the online invitation = 90 just to get into the country... oh well I don't care but i think it is a deterrent

I dunno, I'd have thought they wanted tourists, as tourism = money.

    €90 isn't a fortune :P

I think its a way for these consulates to make money

If you have visa already, do you need the invitation?

Dont go then. 30 euros extra can break the camel's back.

Yes, but if you consider the cost based on area, then it's horribly expensive!
    Russia: 17,000,000 km2, 90 Euros
    Belgium: 30,000 km2, 30 Euros

Russia gives you better bang for the buck!
