Thread: Washer and Dryer (clothes)

On a "Home Improvement" forum, a Russian native asked why Americans have separate Washing and Drying machines. Quite a debate.

Q: Do Russians have the single unit to wash AND dry? Why?

I'd rather have 2 simple machines than 1 complex.
We figured space.

Most people I know in Russia don't have a dryer at all.

Probably an issue of space and/or economics. I've never seen a Russian flat that had a dryer. I guess people feel that it's not that big an inconvenience to hang your clothes up to dry.

Why should a man or a woman bother about buying two appliances instead of one capable of doing the same job much quicker and with less effort? You don’t have to unload the first machine and then load the second one after washing is over. Drying mechanics of a combined machine is reliable enough to worry much about. And one more thing: personally I’ve never seen a dryer being on sale; I saw it only in American movies and in The Simpsons – remember when Homer’s half-brother sold the old Simpsons’ machines to Moe the bartender?
Furthermore, even washer-dryers are rare these days, maybe because after spinning on 1000-1200 rpm clothes become practically dry. And of course one can not always easily find free territory for an extra watchamacallit in a confined space of our standard dwellings.

Why 2 machines? Same reason I don't wash my jeans with my girlfriend's delicates.
I put my sheets on a clothesline to dry. Not in winter though.
The Russian kids freak out on my bathroom. "Is big!" I let them use my wash / dry, it's better for clothes than the industrial machines at the motel.

It's just one of the unbridgable ideological chasms that separate east from west.

After 5 years of washing my clothes in a tiny Russian washing machine and hanging them to dry in the bathroom and kitchen I kiss my American Maytags every wash day!

Why not? It will freeze and dry and smell like heaven. Try it!

Понятия не имею.
Даже если бы и были (в чем я сомневаюсь), какой смысл тащиться с тюком белья в прачечную, если можно и дома постирать? Ради того, чтобы сушкой полюбоваться?

У нас «прачеченая с самообслуживанием» — это звучит дико... Все дома стирают.

Здесь в каждой многоэтажке есть помещение с платными стиральными машинами и сушилками нескольких размеров. У нас там даже есть телевизор.

Я бы побрезговал там что-то стирать.

Ну и нафига? Блажь какая-то. Я бы тоже туда ни ногой. Блох только чужих хватать.
Вряд ли у нас в ближайшее время появятся такие.. э-э.. прачечные, так как спроса на них практически нет. Если бы еще за тебя кто-то стирал... А так то же самое, что дома, только пользоваться машиной, в которой неизвестно кто и неизвестно что до тебя стирал. Еще и платить за это, наверное.

ЗЫ. Я знаю, как выглядят сушки. Я их никогда не видела вживую.

В стирку можно добавлять немного хлоркового отбеливателя. Я когда-то протирала машины дезинфицирующими салфетками, потом перестала. А сушилки просто раскалённые. Здесь у людей много вещей, загрузят сразу несколько машин, два часа - и всё готово.
Народ считает, что если чему-то разрешено существовать, значит оно безопасно, доверяют системе. (Знают, что если что-то где-то не так, было бы полно судебных процессов. ) Я вообще-то и не встречала брезгливых американцев. Видела, как одна знакомая (образованная женщина), готовя вещи перед уходом из дому, поставила крассовки на подушку.

alexB, замечаю, что у вас часто прилагательные, означающие национальность, пишутся с прописной. Это неправильно.

По недосмотру, исправлюсь, хотя правило это мне не нравится, также, как и писать Вы с большой буквы – чтобы заслужить право быть человеком с большой буквы надо какой-то подвиг для начала совершить, а так, заранее оделять почестями, не справедливо как-то.

Есть другая крайность, у тех же Американцев: писать имена собственные с маленькой буквы. Не замечали?

It's easier, it's faster, it's less work. A typical wash/dry cycle will take about 45 minutes. In that 45 minutes your clothes will get washed and dried, and all you need to do is fold. (Hot clothes = no ironing!) In Russia I remember my mom taking half a day to do the laundry, and then it takes even longer to dry. And in the winter you're hanging clothes in the apartment and they're dripping all over the floor, etc. One of the things I will miss upon my move back to Russia is my drier.
