Признать = acknowledge, admit, recognize, accept.
But, of course, everything depends on the context. In your context (the sentence "You've got to admit that British Peoples' accents are appealing.") the word "admit" should be translated as "признать". It definitely sounds better that way. Not that you were grammatically incorrect. It's a matter of right word usage.

Meaning: (verb) to act
Pronunciation: postupAt/postupEEt
Example: ему не следовало так поступать
Translation: he should not have acted so

Shadow - maybe it will help your confuddlement if you translate слышать as "to hear" (passively), and слушать as "to listen" (actively)....
