It would not surprise me if there are many animals that are more than just "intelligent animals." We assume that because their languages do not rely on spoken "words" like ours, that they are not sentient. Who really knows what sort of languages they speak? If humans were psychic, for example, or could transfer our thoughts to others via telepathy, why would we even need a spoken language or words?
