    "Flare" is correct. But "flare pot?" I have never heard of that before. There is also "flare gun" which fires flares into the air -- if you crash your airplane and want someone to find you, for instance.

    I heard this thing referred to as just a flare, but I thought that this particular kind could be called differently, so I've looked for Сигнальная шашка in Lingvo - a mistake I often make, while knowing the meaning of some word but not entirely trusting myself in this knowledge I resort to closest dictionary at hand - in the most cases it's either Lingvo or Multitran. Lingvo said it was a flare pot

    Кстати, по-русски эта байда называется сигнальная шашка (дымовая шашка). А "файер" - это калька с английского fire, придуманная каким-нибудь неграмотным болельщиком
