Не уверен насчет in the underground. Возможно, надо говорить просто underground без предлогов...

Вместо at once лучше сказать right away

I think either of these is better:
No mother will let her child go alone outside now.
Now, no mother will let her child go alone outside.

Underground = metro (trains that go underground) BUT we usually use "metro" for all underground railways except the London Underground and in everyday conversation we call the London Underground "the tube".
Eg. Moscow Metro, Paris Metro, New York Metro, Berlin Metro, London Underground (The Tube)!

Subway = Passage underneath a road so you can go under the road rather than be run over.

American English

Subway = metro
???? = Passage underneath a road

In Melbourne, everyone calls it "Metro". Although it is catually "электрички" in Russian, not "метро". There are only 3 stations underground, and the routing system is similar to Russian "электрички". Moscow has both электрички and метро

certainly don't ever say the London Metro, because nobody ever says this. say the underground or the tube. Don't use the tube though - all the hoover trains have stopped working and the dust levels can be worse than smoking! This won't be too bad for a while, but if they don't sort it out it'll be disgusting.

Britain is a small country and most people live in little houses (2-3 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs, 1 room and kitchen downstairs) with small gardens in towns (I live in a flat, but that's only common in London and only for young and/or "poor" people). We therefore do not have dachas, or anything like a dacha. A few really rich people have a second home in the country, but that's strange.

Therefore you cannot translate "dacha" into English in a way that means anything to the British. I know the dictionary translates it as "summer cottage", but I think if you spoke to a British person, they either know that Russians have "dachas" or they don't. If they do, just write "dacha" eg.

If they don't know you have to explain:

He drove quickly, but we caught up with him.

Went/Drove: both are ok. "Drove" would be slightly more common if he was the driver of a car.

My dictionary translates догнать as "catch up with". If you were in a second car and after a time you went from being a long way behind him to next to, just in front or just behind him, then "catch up with". If after a time you were a long way ahead of him, then "overtake".


I don't know of any other underground system in Britain (but this is where the people in the North tell me there is one and I've proven my ignorance as a Southerner!), I know Manchester and some other places have a tram system, which I think is called a "metro".
