"Three ring circus" - what does it mean? Why three ring? I found it in the libretto of "Chicago", and I understand, that it's a set expression:
Give 'em the old three ring circus
Stun and stagger 'em
When you're in trouble, go into your dance
Though you are stiffer than a girder
They let ya get away with a murder
Razzle dazzle 'em
And you've got to romance

Все равно не понимаю! Почему именно три? Why not four or ten? And - could you imagin a three ring circus? I can't
I bet there is some historic contest behind this expression.
