Thread: the paintings' titles

Hi! That's me.

Could anyone tell me please how to translate into Russian the two titles of the paintings:

Sunday Best

and

Home Time?

I love this artist's works very much and think I am aboute to understand the exact sense of the both titles, but I'm still not sure. By the way is Sunday Best some comon idiom or not? It seems it is being met here and there.

So, what is the correct meaning of the titles?

I don't know the best way to translate this into Russian. But "Sunday best" Is a common idiom for the clothes you would wear if you wanted to dress nice. To wear your Sunday Best means to wear your best clothes. (As if you were going to church)

The rest is the Home Time.

Hmmm, "Home Time" is not really an idiom that I know of, but judging by the picture (the happy family out for a sunday walk together, sort of) , I'd say it means: the happy time when the family is together, Dad's not at work, they have time to spend with each other, at home. Home time.

That's my best bet.


(Lovely pictures indeed - I was ging to say Bazille, maybe, but I suppose it's an English painter, as Ahmad is an English firm.... Who is it?)

It's Peter Szumowski's paintings. He has Polish roots I believe (judging by his surname), but he counts definetly as a British artist. His works are hard to find on the Web and are displayed mostly by tiny samples on several sites. The pictures I love the most are among the four collectible Ahmad tea caddies - my little passion. I have all four and they stand on my piano and inspire me like windows to the golden olden times.

His works usually tell stories like that - the evening gardens, the peaceful strolls, the men in tall hats and women in long skirts - a kind of a Victorian sone to the lovely past we have lost. I love his world. As well as the primitive paintings.

So, it is always like that when you study English - there are dozens of ways to explain some English words, but there can never be any better words to explain them than just these English words. Like these two titles.

Well, curiously enough, I started to read Russian, American, and English classics at the beginning of this year and I've also been looking at various paintings by famous artists lately.
I wouldn't call myself a true romantic, as Yaga put it, though I just want to develop my language skills and expand my general knowledge of the world.
