I've just listened to your recordings (the first ones), Pravit. 'T' in water sounds definitely like 't' to my ears. As for "arty" the first time I listened I heard "t" but when I tell myself "now I should try to hear it as 'd' " I hear it as 'd'.

So it is the pronunciation of "water" and "here" then! Unless you heard an "r" somewhere else in those recordings. Actually, I find it very interesting. Yes, alas, my voice is terribly nasal, I can't stand it.

Just for fun, here's me trying to sound more American:

@Friendy: Does it really sound like a "t"? Here's a recording of my pronunciation(wader) and a "t" pronunciation (water). I sound terribly stupid when trying to force the "t" though.

They sound differently, of course, and the difference is rather significant but I'd still say they are both t's. This is again with relaxed ears, when I order myself to hear it as "d" I do. Maybe it's because the word "water" is very familiar to me or I have a problem with recognizing "d". I'm gonna check it by watching movies.
Does my "t" in "water" sounds like "t" to you?

Friendy, your English accent is really good! In fact, I like it better than mine. The sound level on your recording was a bit low. But it sounds like you pronounce "water" more like Americans do, "wader." Although the rest of your accent sounds kind of British! Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

I know why you sound stupid pronouncing the 't' as a 't': you don't change the vowel preceding it. The first was pronounced as 'waa-dur', the second as 'waa-tur'. The first vowel should be more of an 'awe', so it'd be like 'waw-tur'. Drop the 'r', and it's British. I daren't let you hear a sample of my speech, I sound awful. I sound like my English teacher. Thanks, Pravit. Actually, I think, my accent is more American than British (in general, not this particular line) though the British influence surely exists. As for 't' I had some samples where it was more like "normal" t, in this sample I tried to make it more relaxed but I still don't hear it as d.

I have tried to acquire both a Scottish and an Australian accent (not simultaneously), to mask my Dutch one. In Australian, I've only managed to believably say 'manpower' and 'spider'. Oh yeah, and 'Oh, no!', courtesy of Stephen Fry.

But I've noticed that not only, like, Australian, like, talk that way, but also, like, northern English people? At least I where I come from, the southwest, we still oose proper pronunshayshun, uz do, but younger fowk are beginning to talk like that... O tempora, o mores!
