*A small specimen of the embrionic fluid is removed from a fetus, it will be possible to determine whether the baby will be born with birth defects.
*General Grant had General Lee meet him to sign the surrender.

    ***************************
*A small specimen of the embrionic fluid is removed from a fetus, it will be possible to determine whether the baby will be born with birth defects [or not].
*General Grant had General Lee meet him to sign the surrender.
General Lee met General Grant to sign the surrender.
*As many as 1000 species of finch have been identified.
*Almost everyone fails to pass the driver's test on the first try.
*Not one in one hundred children exposed to the disease are likely to develop symptoms of it.
*There is an unresolved controversy as to whom is the real author of the Elizabethan plays commonly credited to Shakespeare. /
*It was the invent of the hand-held calculator that provided the original technology for the present generation of small computers.
*An organ is a group of tissues capable to perform some special function, as, for example, the heart, the liver, or the lungs.
    ... capable of performing ...
... function. Examples of organs are the heart, the liver ... /Not logical structure. Make sure that there is no confustion between what the nouns "heart, liver and lungs" refer to. Now it's ambiguous because it might refer to "organ" OR "function"/
*In simple animals, most behavior is reflex movement.
*The Ford Theatre where Lincoln was shot must have been restored.
*As every other nation, the US used to define its unit of currency, the dollar, in terms of the gold standard.
*To be considered a parliamentary system, the prime minister must be appointed on the basis of the distribution of power in the parliament.
/Not a logical structure. Are you considering the prime minister to be "a parlimentary system"? Say something like "For a countery to be considered a parliamentary system, the prime..." /
*The people of Western Canada have been considering separating themselves from the rest of the provinces.
*A (or <While>) war correspondent, Hemingway used his experiences for some of his most powerful novels. -> experience
A war correspondent или While being a war correspondent
*The salary of a bus driver is much higher than that of a teacher.
*Only a few nations in the world export diamonds.

Overall, very good. You'll pass your exam with excellence!

At first, огромное спасибо Admin'у за ответ!

Предложение <<*Not one in one hundred children exposed to the disease are likely to develop symptoms of it.>> должно содержать одну ошибку в одном из подчеркнутых случаев (это старый добрый TOEFL model test). Предполагаю, что вместо <are likely> надо <is likely>, либо вместо <not one> надо <no one>.

<<*There is an unresolved controversy as to whom is the real author of the Elizabethan plays commonly credited to Shakespeare.>> Думаю, что вместо <whom> надо <who>.

<<*It was the invent of the hand-held calculator that provided the original technology for the present generation of small computers.>>

<<*As every other nation, the US used to define its unit of currency, the dollar, in terms of the gold standard.>> Здесь мне не нравится фраза <As every other nation>, но не знаю, где именно может быть ошибка... Либо вместо <used to define> надо <are used to defining>, ибо, как говорит г-н Raymond Murphy, <I used to do smth> значит, что я делал что-то в прошлом, а сейчас не делаю. А вот <I am used to doing smth> значит, что smth is not strange for me (now).

____________ a parliamentary system, the prime minister must be appointed on the basis of the distribution of power in the parliament.
    Variants:
    A) The considered
    B) To be considred
    C) Considering
    D) Considers

_________war correspondent, Hemingway used his experiences for some of his most powerful novels.
    Variants:
    A) But a
    B) It is a
    C) While
    D) A
A war correspondent, Hemingway used ...etc
А так как Present Participle от глагола to be не употребляется в обстоятельствах времени (например, не <While being in Leningrad>, а <While in Leningrad>), получаем "While war correspondent, ...."

    [offtopic]

Not one in one hundred children exposed to the disease is likely to develop symptoms of it.

There is an unresolved controversy as to who is the real author of the Elizabethan plays commonly credited to William Shakespeare.

It was the invention of the hand-held electronic calculator that provided the original technology for the present generation of small but powerful computers.

    Invent - изобретать (глагол)
    Invention - изобретение (существительное)

Like every other nation, the United States used to define its unit of currency, the dollar, in terms of the gold standard.

Комментарий: "as" используется в конструкция типа "as you know".

To be considered a parliamentary system, the prime minister must be appointed on the basis of the distribution of power in the parliament.

Комментарий: "While" отсекается потому, что оно должно использоваться в более сложной кострукрукции "While being a ..."

Спасибо, что разрушил мои представление об админах, которых I used to know!

Now let's go back to the theme of our discusion : o)
Admin: "While" отсекается потому, что оно должно использоваться в более сложной кострукрукции "While being a ..."
[While a child he ...] OR [When he was a child ...] И не было там никаких "Being a child". Being a child he couldn't drive a car]
Вот я подумал, что, может, это просто пережиток прошлого, как [I shall go there] и др.?

Well, people use all these versions anyway :) And they never say "I shall" in the USA. Only in UK.
The correct one for the TOEFL was "A". You could use "While a..." as well, but there was no such an option on your test.

В американском английском говорят "has gotten used"

Sorry, can't understand all the Russian, so forgive me if I'm repeating something you already have discussed:

    I would definitely say:

While war correspondent, Hemingway used his experiences for some of his most powerful novels.

    If I said:

A war correspondent, Hemingway, used his experiences for some of his most powerful novels.

I would include that second comma, and I don't think it makes sense for someone as famous as Hemingway. He wasn't "a war-correspondent": he was a novelist who spent time being a war correspondent.

For your recent post, I'd say:

She has got used to eating our food.
(Very good British English, that, we don't use "gotten")

I somehow thought your room would be more spacious.

Besides rain, natural water is seldom pure.
(I don't like this sentence at all, but I like the other options less)

An hour hadn't passed before we realised that we had taken the wrong road.
(Again, strange sentence, I'd say "An hour had passed before..." for positive sentence, or "It was less than an hour before ..." for negative sentences)

    While a war correspondent

    and

    While war correspondent

both seem ok. I'm afraid I can't really say which is better Very hard for me as a native speaker to know my own grammar.

I think "a" is probably slightly better if there is no continuation. But I'd put:
"While war correspondent for the BBC". Sorry, can't help much.

I would probably not really write it either way, but:

Hemmingway wrote his most powerful novels (based on his experiences) while he was a war correspondent.

Part in (brackets) can be included, or not.

"The water of nature" is grammatically ok. But "natural water" is a more idiomatic expression meaning nature's water/water of nature/water in nature.

    I'd write:

Rain is almost the only pure source of natural water.

    Or

Natural water is seldom pure, apart from as rain.
