Thread: Summer in Russia - advice needed!

Hello everyone! I am 2 weeks away from leaving to spend the summer in Saratov, Russia to continue my study of the Russian language. I'm also going to be spending some time in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well. I was wondering if anyone could give me any tidbits of advice for someone who's never been there. I did have one specific question - what's the best/cheapest way to call to the USA from payphones? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

There will be Russians here who can give you more accurate and detailed advice, but I will mention that it is possible to buy cards (like международная карта or something) and then use public phones (or any phone) .. you can get like 7-12R per minute to the US I think. You can often buy those cards at kiosks etc. .. it depends where you are in Russia. If you just go to the local telephone office, it'll cost quite a bit more. But you might get a poor quality line.

some mobile systems have quite beneficial tariffs. My cell operator (Megafon) provides Moscow cell phone calls for 3 cents (1 rouble) a minute, and any other calls (including the US) for $0.23

You know, I had a real problem in SPb. It was impossible to buy a card in the airport.
