Yep, this is a set phrase.
я попытался переводить текст на английском языке на русский язык - That is how you should have written if you wanted to go with the original phrase, but it doesn't sound good anyway

Кое-что means that you specify only one thing that happened and you know exactly what it was

Навестить is to come see a person or persons. It's usually about paying a friendly visit to someone. It's not about places, it's about seeing people.

Погибнуть means tragic death, that's why it fits in better in your text, makes it more expressive

Ранить is most likely to be used if someone gets shot by a gun or gets a sharp metal splinter from the granade for example. Those kinds of things cause wounds

Пострадать is a wider term, it implies wounds, broken bones, concussions, even mental suffering, so I think it's more appropriate to use this one there
