LOL! How can something this mild be offensive to anyone? I could have said it in primary school and no one would have blinked. Besides, if you're willing to give some kind of reasonable explanation for why you feel that way as that person did I think it is justified, i.e if it's not a one word response.
Yeah, I agree that example is milder than philadelphia cheese (I don't remember it getting censored, though). Everyting in moderation, even moderation.

According to one Russian author there is much justification for learning a certain amount of slang, swearing or мать. Here is part of Edward Topol’s introduction in his book “Dermo! The real Russian that Tolstoy Never Used”.
Dear colleague! I will now reveal to you the secret of Russian as spoken by real people. Please remember it when translating all dialogues. I rely on this secret when writing dialogues and speeches for all my characters, from Gorbachev and Yeltsin and right down to a prostitute plying her trade on Moscow’s main drag. Here is the rule:
Every real Russian sentence is constructed so that the word “motherfrugger” or “whore” can be inserted at any point – even after every word.
Only the translator’s unfailing adherence to this rule can assure that Russian characters’ conversations and speeches will sound as if they are coming from the mouths of real people.
Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to talk, think and act for myself. - Chief Joseph, Nez Perce

In most cases, I think every thought can be expressed without using profane words.
As for the cencorship - I think if Lampada edits our posts it would be nice that the general meaning were left intact. Generally I don't mind such edits and approve but sometimes I can't figure out what exactly this or that user wanted to say because of such edits. I don't think someone here would be offended when I said sh|t or cr@p while describing some ocurrence or event outside this forum and here I say that edits are unnesessary but if one user insults the other one - that's quite another matter.
And of course, I think that any racist, nationalistic, extremistic and other -istic statements must be deleted.

Are we really that sensitive that we can't handle a little heated debate, or the odd four letter anglo-saxon word? What's the obsession with making everything oh-so 'nice'. The forum is generally civil without censorship.

I agree that personal, rough insults must be edited. But I disagree, then Lampada edits dirty words (wich I always write changing some of the letters to symbols), that shows, for example, my emotions and don't insult anyone personally. There are some cases then I just can't explain my feelings about something without using such lexic, sorry.
Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!

I like censorship in this context; it encourages me to think of witty, verbose ways to personally attack people, thou ill-nurtured flax-wench!

It promotes physical violence so I think we must cease, cease now and cease forever. Let it be know that it will be forever so. Maintain yourself within an circle of the diameter of your armspan.

We execrate physical violence, да да да да нам надо !

I've been saving everything I deleted. It's all just childish attempts of personal insults and name calling. Так что не надо ля-ля: it has nothing to do with politics.

Maybe the problem is in a moderator. Who knows.
Maybe other moderator would do better

I think Lampada does a great job. If she did not moderate, these discussions would quickly turn into a litany of name calling and childish nonsense. If that is what people want, maybe they should go to youtube?

The last comment she edited, by the way, was a personal insult against me. I do not see why we need to leave up nasty, hurtful comments, but if people want to engage in that kind of детский сад, there are plenty of other places on the internet to do so.

Thanks Lampada, for all you do. I know it is often a thankless job but I for one appreciate it. Just because our countries are sinking into another cold war, doesn't mean this forum has to.

There is a way to prevent it all from happening
This thread is not related to learning Russian language, it's also mostly in English.
So, as you were saying: "there are plenty of other places on the internet to do so"
Let's not create such threads and people won't insult each other

I was trying to create a thread about abused Russian children in the US and I got banned for a week by our fellow moderator for that and my thread was deleted. But after thinking about it I would agree: let's delete such threads. But let's not create double standards and provoke favoritism: all such threads must be deleted. And people would not insult each other.

I've been insulted many times during discussions about language as well. So no, forcing everyone to speak Russian only or only discuss linguistics will not stop rudeness. Rudeness will only stop when people decide to stop being rude.

As far as that goes, most of the people on this thread have been very polite and have not insulted or personally attacked anyone. Maybe some people just should avoid political topics if they cannot restrain their tempers.

    You misunderstood me
It's mostly not about English, it's about the topic. The topic is way far from this forum agenda

Then why is there a whole section for politics? No one is forcing you to participate in this thread, Doomer. Least of all me.

First of all why this thread isn't in politics then?
Second, yes, no one is forcing, but I can tell the same to you: don't participate in such threads and you won't get insulted, really simple. But it's not a solution I think. Reducing number of controversial threads could help.
