Hmmm, interesting new word for me. (I've seen the three dudes referred to in Russian as три царя, три мудреца, or три мага -- i.e., kings, wise men, or mages.)

It is an old word, but still understandable. It's rarely used in daily speech, but you can often see it in fairy tales, legends etc.
The root is the same as in "волшебник".
