Thread: Pronouncing the word пожалуйста

Hello,
I know someone who is taking Russian classes. They were told when pronouncing the word пожалуйста that the letter "у" is silent. Is this true? Any help is appreciated.

No, it's the "й" letter that is silent.

How, you think, is it possible to pronounce пожалйста?

P.S. I wanted to say "Как ты собирался произносить пожалйста?", but I don't know how it is in English. I presume "to be going to" construction doesn't work here. So, can anyone help me?

if you try actually saying that you'll notice that there will be a very short reduced vowel there.

Can someone please type in English phonetically how to say it? Are there any parts of Russia or else where that do not prounence the "y"? (except this person's class).

Yeh I noticed this before. It's like the У is still there!

So to sum it up, just say it like TATY did; it's a spoken word so the person's not going to pay that much attention or really care; I still can't get over здрастье -- I always just thought it was what someone said when they said здравствуйте really fast. Just don't say пожалуууууууууууйста and no one will think you the worse for it.

So from listening to the songs, the answer is that the "y" in пожалуйста is pronounced.

I think it should be How are you supposed to...

Or 'How do you suppose 'пожалйста' is pronounced'.

This only proves the fact that Й is not a vowel as some people claim. If it was a vowel, then лйс would be pronounciable.

The answer to a question like this is -- in what register? I mean, are you speaking formally, singing, or goofing off with friends?

Standard Russian is probably pa-zh

It's only phonetic.

Actually, "dutra" seems strange. I hear a very reduced "у" when speak to myself.
