Thread: Need help on pronunciation , please !!!

I need something settled , in the book " Russian for Dummies " , it says you pronounce goodbye , like this . ( duh svee duh nee ye ) . Yet some Russian speaking friends said it was pronounced like this , or something like this . ( dos vi don ye ) ... So if you know how to pronounce it , give a good pronunciation like I put it , please .

It's not that I don't trust them , it's just difficult to understand them . I guess I'll ask them to say it slower next time . Thank you though !

It's a name of the song and you'll have a lot of opportunities to get the way it's pronounced. 0:30 for example.


or this at 1:30

duh-svee-da-nee-ya = до свидания - standard (good form) pronunciation
duh-svee-da-nya = до свиданья - more relaxed and coloquial pronunciation

Both are used equally often and you may choose whichever you like. The second won't make you sound uneducated - it's perfectly fine.

You can hear both variants of pronunciation in this song - the singer (Alla Pugachova) repeats in refrain "До свиданья, лето, до свидания" (Goodbye, summer, goodbye), i.e. she uses a colloquial form first, and then a standard one (eg. 0:29).

The reason it sounds different when sped up is that at normal speeds of talking, O sound reduces to a schwa sound in Russian.
