    Russia's National Anthem

i found out a couple of years ago that russia went back to the old soviet anthem, but with different words. i'm wondering what was the basis behind that since obviously the soviet union is no more. from what i've read, it's said that the old anthem had no words and i guess was "less inspiring" compared to the soviet one. i wonder if the older people, when they hear it, still sing the old words instead of the new ones, hehe.

    anthem

I was WAITIng for someone to ask. And now, unfortunately I must tell. Two years of selling used cars taught me many things, including the art of bad puns. Used to be I'd have a dealer plate and part o' my pay would be the driving of a new automobile every day... thus... welll.... car-per-diem. It is just an old chat handle that has stuck with me.

Now... To Things of Great importance. Our Great Patriotic Hymn: Here she is!

    Chorus

    Chorus

Just to make comparison, here is the new anthem:

My wife doesn't even know the words to the new one, and she was only in her early teens when the USSR went the way of the dodo, so she's had plenty of time to learn them if she'd been so inclined.

Her theory is that there's a cultural unwillingness by Russians of her parents' generation to address the fact that things have changed. Communism went out with a whimper rather than a bang, so they were never forced (by events) to re-evaluate anything. Having been brought up and lived their entire lives under the communists, and never known anything else, they're just not able (or willing) to discard that legacy. Kind of a society in denial deal.

Personally, I just reckon it's because the old words just sound better That and the fact that you were expected to know the words under the communists, so everyone learned them, but are free to ignore the new one if you so wish, and lots of people do.

As an atheist I cannot possibly accept the line "Хранимая Богом родная страна." There should be no religion in a secular society's anthem, period.
Also, I cannot listen to the line "Широкий простор для мечты и для жизни" without peeing myself with laughter.

Yah well, but are you forced to sing it? It's a completely different biscuit (never mind) when even non-christians are required, e.g. in court, to swear by the bible, as in America...

    thanks

    thanks for the words!!

Putting new words to old music has a rich history. Nothing wrong with that in principle, eh?? I guess it's just a matter of Which new words.

On the subject of anthems, I can't stand the star spangled banner, musically or textually. Altough you just don't hear the word spangled enough these days. I'd like to see a pepper spangled omelet on a menu.

A different car every day, car per?? That's the way to make time with the ladies, huh?

Just so you know, this is no longer true. Now you simply say: "You swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth." With your hand facing forward(which actually originated from the times when they used to brand the palms of criminals..)

Anyways, they probably still do it in the damn cheesy ass movies. Just remember, a movie is a movie.

Me too. So I don't care for new text, I don't want to learn the new one and I hope in a case when I need to sing the anthem aloud it won't be my solo...

ugh, i think the star spangled banner is old fashioned for our country. now i and a lot of people think it would be cool if "proud to be an american" was our country's national anthem.
