It does still exist; it's just called the фСБ now.
My point exactly. If they are so afraid of the KGB, they might try to follow up on its modern name. If all the commuinst KGB spies had to do to trick an American is to say, I am from FSB, no wonder they got the atom bomb!

ФСБ just doesn't have the same recognition or fear factor. КГБ is practically a brandname -- same as Band-Aid, Kleenex, etc. Besides, people are slow to change with most anything. Consider, for instance, that here in the US, following the 9/11 reforms, several of our government offices changed names (among other things). The INS no longer exists, but I'd bet you 99% of people referring to it still use that term as opposed to USCIS. Yes, ФСБ is not technically the КГБ but you're just splitting hairs. Unless you're writing a dissertation or a news story, it's the same difference.
Заранее благодарю всех за исправление ошибок в моём русском.

ФСБ has completely different public image and most people here don't connect it to its famous predecessor. No one calls it КГБ, maybe except very old people.
But many (especially in rural areas) still connect Germany to the Nazi regime (not that they believe that Germans are Nazis, but it's one of the first things they think of).
