Thread: Explosion in Minsk - what happened?

Ok, I'll write a report on Belarus. Before that, I'll travel through Ukraine. It seems a bit more risky there, so I won't stay long, but I really want to see the Black Sea coast of Ukraine and a couple of historical places. But really, I am a bit worried about safety, and how I'll manage in Russian. Going to Ukraine (alone!!!) seemed like a really good/cool idea in London... daydreaming about going somewhere exotic & different and practice Russian... But right at this minute I am getting cold feet! On the Lonely Planet travel forum, there are lots of cautionary tales about the dangers of Ukraine... (But if people like Gromozeka and it-ogo are anything to go by, then it's probably a great country. We shall see!)

From what I understand, it's national policy in Ukraine to write signs etc in Ukrainian as opposed to Russian, despite the fact that lots of people speak Russian as their first language. For my personal reasons, I would have thought it would be better if it was bilingual, for example.

I didn't have enough time to wait for a Russia visa, that's why I start by travelling in Ukraine (does not require a visa from EU citizens) and Belarus which had a fast track visa service. If I am still enjoying the travelling when I am in Belarus, then I'll get a Russian visa there, where a faster service is available. Else, I'll save Russia for some other time.

They seem really keen on tourism, just not according to the to the standard European model.
Actually, a visa to Russia is not entirely uncomplicated or fast, but a visa for Belarus is simple. Took me under 24 hours. The embassy staff was super friendly, despite the fact that I had accidentally filled in the wrong form for my application.

I'll let you know if I see any spies or dictators.... or tractors, lol!

But my reason for going is because it's a very safe Russian-speaking country (I am a woman, and travelling alone) it has really lovely nature, interesting culture & history + historic places. I know I'll be forced to speak Russian there - baptism of fire!! Happy to write a report, if anyone is interested.

I just don't understand how much people speak Belarussian, as opposed to Russian; and what language signs etc are in. For my own purposes.... I hope they don't speak Belarussian much, it would really confuse me.
I'm sure I'm only one of many people here who would love to hear about your trip when you return! Am very interested in Minsk, and hope to see it one day myself! Make sure you have a great trip

Official sources as well as independent media (which I personally trust) say that there are no political intentions in terrorists actions. The immediate actor claimed that he had done it because he enjoys other people suffering. I think it's kind of mental disorder. And I'm sure if there was any little connection found between the terract and politics the government would spread it out all over the world. I totally deny a theory that it can be done under Lukashenko's order.

That is awesome. Are you sure it's true?
I did not know there was a lot of Swedish investment in Russia. Or was he talking about Russian investment in Sweden?

They should start up the ferry line that used to run between St Petersburg and Stockholm. It stopped because it wasn't profitable. St Petersburg probably has better shopping than Stockholm now, and the tourism sites in St Pertersburg are amazing (I've been there twice, ages ago). I am sure lots of people in St Petersburg would enjoy a cruise to Stockholm.

Я думаю, что дело в принципе взаимности: они нам сто вопросов о Ходорковском и Абхазии, а мы им сто вопросов про безвизовый режим.
