Voprosik takoi: pochemu po-russki govoriat inogda 'v' v sleduyushim kontekste?

"на маршрутках -> в маршрутках. I would say "я поеду на маршрутке/автобусе/машине" as well as "я поеду в маршрутке/автобусе/машине" but "слушать музыку на маршрутке" sounds wrong. Unfortunately I can't explain why."

I think the question was when one should say на русском языке and when в русском языке...

На русском языке мы разговариваем, "в" мы употребляем в случаях когда говорим о каких-то особенностях языка, например, в русском языке есть три рода.

Выражение "ездить на чём-то" появилось тогда, когда ездили на лошадях. Т.е., когда ездили действительно "на". С появлением автомобилей стали ездить "в", но выражение осталось. Поэтому ехать на маршрутке слух не режет, а вот слушать музыку (сидеть, спать, и т.д) на маршрутке режет.

Совершенно верно. Именно поэтому и нельзя сказать (режет слух) "ехать на карете". Однако, можно сказать "ехать на телеге". Думаю, потому, что у телеги нет крыши. У первых автомобилей, кстати, крыши тоже не было. А ещё, ездили на конке, хотя крыша у неё была.

Но это уже, согласитесь, дебри.

2) Can I use the word 'jitney' instead?

Nobody uses 'Jitney', I never heard of it before I looked up the translation of "маршутка". Shuttle bus is a better analogy, although the american shuttle buses usually gets a bunch of people onboard and then go to every stop each person wants, no matter where. It is not the route defined version as маршутка, but not that far off.

It seems okay to say either 'jitney' or 'shuttle'. The word 'jitney' is used on the East coast. There's a jitney that goes to the Hamptons.

I don't think there's quite an accurate exact translation for маршрутка because there's not quite the same thing in English-speaking countries... At least, if there are, I don't know of any!

Is maxi-taxi a familar word for something like that? Or is it just rubbish?

It's probably just the brand name of a taxi service/company. But it sounds a bit funny to me because it resembles the name for feminine hygiene products in English...

Well no, there are so-called Maxi taxis, I have been in some. It is basically a minivan turned into a taxi. But the taxi goes wherever you tell it to go, while the маршрутка goes on a predefined route...

To sum up:

Maxi-taxi: A big taxi that you would take if you have many people in your party.
Shuttle: A big van that random people would enter either at: a) different locations going to one place (city to airport) b) same location going to different locations (from airport to city) c) one location to another (airport to hotel)
маршрутка: Random people entering at different locations along a predefined route going to different locations on the same predefined route...

And as I am hearing Jitney is the same as a shuttle?

Mr. Oh-So-Humble, and do you know how far the word maxi-taxi is spread?

Well... no. I do not have the current demographic of maxi-taxi usage in the United States, or U.K. for that matter. But it is used in America. Just do a google on maxi-taxi and see how many hits you get.
