    watch - listen - saw

Во первых, поздравляю всех с новым 2014 годом.
Спасибо за вашу помощь в 2013.

My first question for 2014 is for both Russian and English users.
    What is the correct expression:
I watched / listened / saw an opera / theatrical show
Я посмотрел / послушал / увидел одну оперу
Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

    C Новым годом, Антонио!

    Я был в опере
Я посмотрел оперу, if you insist on your versions.

I don't insist. It sounds reasonable.
    So the correct will be:
"Я был на "Евгений Онегин" Чайковского or "Я посмотрел "Евгений Онегин" Чайковского".

The new question is Евгений should decline?
For example: Я был на Евгеном Онегки Чаиковоского.

Also this is a general question of whether books titles, theatrical works, ballets, operas etc should decline when we use them in a context.
    Например какое выражение правильное:
    1. Я прочитал "Анну Каренину" Толстого
    2. Я прочитал "Анна Каренина" Толстого
Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

    Я был на "Евгении Онегине".
    Я прочитал "Анну Каренину".
    But:
Я был на опере "Евгений Онегин".
    Я прочитал роман "Анна Каренина".

Few words on use of "в" and "на".
"В" used when you referring to a place where a show takes place or to a show in general. "На" when you mean a specific show.
    Сходить в кино - Сходить на [фильм] <название фильма>
    Сходить в театр - Сходить на [спектакль\пьесу] <название пьесы >
    Сходить в оперу - Сходить на [оперу] <название оперы>
    (Words in [] usually omitted)

I watched / listened / saw an opera / theatrical show

I watched an opera (if it was on TV or DVD etc.)
I listened to an opera (on the radio, cd, etc.)
I saw an opera (in person).

    IMHO

    Scott

So you had to put "Евгений Онегин" into предложный падеж, and failed.
Too many cases in Russian, I know.
    We can imagine the conversation:
    - Где ты был, на "Евгении Онегине" ?
    - Ага, на нём.

Я посмотрел / послушал / увидел одну оперу
If you have recently been in theatre watching a certain opera you'd probably say: "я посмотрел оперу".
If you have recently listened a record of an opera's music and arias then you would say: "я послушал оперу" or "я прослушал оперу".
If you want to say that once, maybe many years ago you watched an opera, and so are aquainted with it plot or music, you can say: "я видел эту оперу", "я слышал музыку из этой оперы".
