    США != СШУ
    Adding an 'a' to the end of the word is fine, since you don't change the initial...
    Ah. That makes much more sense to me now...

    ????
    NATO= North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which means you would say "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization's spokesman said 'blah blah blah.'" What middle are you talking about?
    I don't know what you are saying.

    People aren't going to saw the whole thing though, they shorten it to NATO, even in the possesive, NATO's.

    I still don't get what your point is.

    синдром приобретенного иммунодефицита. You seem to be asking about why its СПИД and not СПИ, since it is 3 words, why is it not 3 letters?

    The reason why you decline the "letter in the middle" is because the acronym happens to end in that letter.

    It's the same in English though, "immunodeficiency" is one word but it is still AIDS, and not AIS. Firstly, in English it can also be Acquire immune deficiency syndrome, which is four seperate words. Notice though that in HIV the D is not used. Same with Russian ВИЧ. I expect the Russian form has followed the English convention.

    I don't think we're talking about the same thing -- what I understood you to be saying was that ... well, never mind -- I understand what KV was saying in the first place now, and it would only add to further the confusion.
