I was told that if a "noun with abstract meaning" comes after the following verbs

хотеть
искать
желать
(there are more on that list)

I use genitive.

Does this rule apply only to nouns with abstract meaning?

I should say я хочу эту книгу and not я хочу этой книги

because книга is not really a noun with abstract meaning?

Just use Accusative for any noun (if without negation) and you will be on the safe side. It will do always.

я хочу этой книги
