    Verbal negation in a sentence - both accusative and genitive?

    I was always told that if I have an animate noun after a verb like знать I use genitive
    For instance,

    Я знаю этого человека.

    However, I found that having negation in the sentence can turn it to accusative

    Ты не знаешь его жену?

    But can I still say

    Ты не знаешь его жены?

    If I can use both...then my questions are:
    Is there a big difference? What would you say?

    Without negation - Accusative only.
    With negation - either Genitive (preferrable) or Accusative.
    "Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

    Смысл абсолютно одинаковый, разницы нет. Для меня "Ты не знаешь его жены" звучит как устаревшая форма. Это грамматически корректно, но в современном языке так не говорят. Я могу придумать только один пример, когда я в живой речи мог бы действительно употребить "Ты не знаешь его жены": если бы этой фразой я имел ввиду "ты не знаешь, на что способна его жена, что она за человек".
