    Irregular verbs (4??)

My teacher said that there are only four irregular verbs in Russian. Is this true?? If so, are they

    хотить
    мочь
    пить
    идти

    ???

How do you conjugate them? I'm sorry, I don't have my "big silver" or "501" books with me, as I'm at work...

I'll give it a shot on some, please correct!

    хотить

    Я хочу
    Ты хочешь
    Он хотит
    Мы хотим
    Вы хотите
    Они хотят

    мочь

    Я могу
    Ты мочешь
    Он мочает
    Мы мочаем
    Вы мочаете
    Они мочют

    пить

    Я ??
    Ты ??
    Он ??
    Мы ??
    Вы ??
    Они ??

    идти

    Я иду
    Ты идёшь
    Он идёт
    Мы идём
    Вы идёте
    Они идют

Of course there are more than 4 irregular verbs.
Actually there are way more irregular verbs than normal ones, just like in English.

пить = to drink (imperfective aspect)

    пью
    пьёшь
    пьёт
    пьём
    пьют

I can't see anything particular in the words мочь, пить y идти. As far as i know there are 3 irregularly conjugated verbs: бежать, хотеть, брезжить.
Oh, you have conjugated Putin's favourite word "мочить"
    Ты можешь
    Он может
    Мы можем
    Вы можете
    Они могут

I think that your teacher has been "licking frogs' as you put it.

There must be a lot more that than only 4. Master Russian even has a link to irregular verbs somewhere. I could find it for you but I'm sure that you have time to find it yourself (inbetween visits from your boss) Just tell him to moo off!

Obviously we have a communication problem. What is the definition of an irregular verb? I don't think anyone would call идти an irregular verb. It's a perfectly normal verb of the class that ends in a consonant and has the unusual infinitive ending of stressed -ти. There's 10-20 of these.

OTOH хотеть and бежать with their odd mixture of first- and second-conjugation forms are irregular. What (he wonders aloud) would the teacher say about дать and есть. Are they regular, hmm? Young whippersnappers need to look those up and I'll give you a clue - memorize the phrase that every little kid hears, Когда я ем, я глух и нем. When I eat I'm deaf and dumb (I don't hear anything and I don't talk). Much better aphorism in Russian, eh? =:^0

According to my grammar book, it says:
Irregular verbs. A number of verbs conform to none of the above pattern*, or combine elements of both conjugations. They include бежать, есть, хотеть, дать as well as чтить.
*consonnant change and mutation, stress change and so forth.

We must not be afraid to face the facts here. All Russian verbs are irregular.

Crap, I should have asked her tonight.
Thanks for all the replies, though, and keep them coming! I'll ask her on Monday, my next class, what she meant by "irregular"...
