    Did you miss out on the whole зимою discussion we had a while back, which has permanently damaged Leof's fragile sanity?

    It is archaic and used mostly in poetry. That's your when and why.

    But isn't зимою a noun? I was told it was adjectival???

    You're right, I assumed you were asking about nouns, but rereading your subject, I stand corrected. But it is the same logic for the adjectives. Archaic and poetic!

    Если ввести в яндекс, например, "над рекою" , то почти всё там (1025 сайтов) - поэзия. То же самое можно увидеть про "зимою".
