Thread: Good, Good and Good

Can someone explain this to me?

I am just starting Russian but I ran across this and I am puzzled as to why the spelling(in Russian) would change.

For example:

Good Morning - Доброе чтро
Good Afternoon - Добрый день
Good Evening - Добрый вечер

If good in Russian is - Добрый
Then why does “Good” change spelling when stating Good Morning?

because there are masculine, feminine, neuter and plural endings. adjectives have endings which correspond to the gender of the thing its describing

If you are starting Russian, doesn't your textbook explain this?

I am leaning Russian, I started with the Pimsleaur CDs, which I think are great but I have to listen to them over and over again. So I am only on Lesson 1 unit 3. But I got all that pretty good. I also invested in Russian Translation Software by SYSTRAN which help me translate her emails from Russian to English. She can read English but not write it. So I no longer need that one site.

This only takes place in Turkish Russian. If you are using non-Turkish Russian, then all the endings are the same.

You will find a lot of suprises in russian but they can all be mastered.
Excpept for that blasted word "причём"... I've only seem to have got one of its meanings understood.

O I never thought it was going to be easy, and yes I am sure it is in the books. But yup I dont really want to crack open the books just yet.
Want to learn the alphabet first, as I think it is obviously a key point.

And thanks Dogboy for the offer, I am sure I will need help in the near future.

But I will have to say that I am happy with Pimsleur so far. I think its the repetive sounds that is helping me.

I was never really a reader in the first place, heck I barely passed my English classes in High School. But that does not discourage me one bit. I will eventually be fluid enough to make people laugh at me.

But thanks to all who let me know how many different ways that you can say GOOD in Russian. I just have to say wow.

There are basically 26 adjectival forms (excluding comparative and short forms) depending on gender,case, plurality and inatimateness.

The Russian language has 3 genders, masculine, feminine, and neuter.

The Russian language also has 6 cases.
Nominative(Именительный) - subject of the sentence
Genitive(Родительный) - possession
Accusative(Винительный ) - direct object
Dative(Дательный) - indirect object
Instrumental(Творительный) - with something
Prepositional(Предложный) - about something

So there are (6 x 3) = 18 different forms for adjectives depending on use and gender.

Also there is a plural form for adjectives. Plural forms do not depend on gender so there are only 6 plural forms, one for each case.

Finally, the masculine accusative ending depends on whether or not you are talking about an animate or inanimate object, singular or plural. This adds two more forms bringing the total to 26 forms.

well since a good lot of the 26 endings are just "the same" as others, Im sure you could bring the total down to 22 or 21.
